ANGELINE'S HIGH POINTS FROM HIGH POINT!
After her 3RD YEAR VISITING THE HIGH POINT MARKET (HPMKT) IN nORTH CAROLINA, Angeline hall sits down with DUSTIN WARD TO reflect on memorable moments, lessons learned, and fun times!
HIGH POINT FROM YEAR TO YEAR
DLW: Angeline, thank you for finding the time to sit down with me today. This was my first HPMKT and your third, and all I can say is WOW! It was a lot to take in at one time. How was this market similar to years past for you?
AGH: Every HPMKT is unique in its own way, and this year was no different. I think one aspect that is consistent is the exposure to amazing and innovative design from vendors we have existing working relationships with and getting to learn about new brands and new collections. It is always exciting to see these amazing pieces through the lens of current AGD projects and keeping them in mind for future clients!
DLW: What was different about this year’s experience?
AGH: Normally, the AGD team and I are primarily focused on sourcing new products while at HPMKT. Though there was a lot of that, this year I tried to focus more on networking with colleagues from across the country, sitting in on some amazing panels, and really trying to learn more about our industry. I was also able to fan girl out a little when we had the pleasure of meeting Ray Booth and Alexa Hampton! And I know you and Marci loved getting to meet Corey Damen Jenkins!
Panels & peers
DLW: Speaking of panels, it was so much fun getting to see AGD represented on two very insightful discussions about the industry. Can you walk me through the experience of speaking at HPMKT?
AGH- Last year was my first time speaking on a panel, and despite my initial reservations about public speaking I have really come to enjoy being a part of a group discussion with my peers about the ups and downs of the interior design industry and small business ownership.
DLW: What topics did AGD speak on this year?
AGH: The panel I was on was focused on the process of creating bespoke interiors for clients through customization and craftsmanship. I was very excited about this because all of us at AGD pride ourselves on being able to deliver those one-of-a-kind spaces to our clients, and we achieve this by really learning how they live and what they want. We then bring that to life through spaces designed just for them. Everyone on my panel was fantastic. I was not only able to share my thoughts but was able to learn as well. Spending this time with my colleagues helps to humanize the ups and downs of owning your own business.
DLW: Our teammate Marci also participated in a panel this year. What is that like for you getting to see someone on your team speak about the industry?
AGH: I was so excited that Marci was able to be on a panel this year! I have known Marci since we were kids, and I know when Marci has something to say she is going to say it! She joined a great group of women who discussed building a better business through strong contracts, sound business decisions, and forward-thinking practices. I was so proud of what she contributed to the discussion.
Old & new in harmony
DLW: HPMKT serves a source of inspiration for designers. What inspired you this year?
AGH: This year, I was inspired by the showrooms that infused traditional elements alongside modern pieces of furniture. The merchandising this year has seemingly shifted from “this is what a collection looks like in a room” to showing how you can mix antique and current pieces into a space that feels comfortable and informed without being overly curated. This is very important to us at AGD. In fact, at this year’s Round Top, Reno and the team were able to source amazing vintage and new pieces that will be making their way into our clients’ homes.
DLW: Did any one piece of furniture stick out to you?
AGH- Oh gosh, there were so many, but one piece we talked about all weekend was a bar cabinet designed so the TV could raise and lower in the back of it. I thought this was a brilliant way to have function and form all in one piece.
Let the good times roll!
DLW: Ok, so one thing we have to talk about is the whirlwind of people, parties, and places that is HPMKT! I could barely keep up with you and Marci. How do you do it?
AGH: Everyone’s first HPMKT is a lot to take in, but once you get the flow of opening weekend it can be so much fun! I really love getting to spend time with our amazing Dallas colleagues and vendors in a new setting and also getting to meet really fun and interesting people. From the time you leave Dallas till the time you get back in your car to come home, there are so many opportunities to connect with old friends and to make new ones!
DLW: Any advice to someone going to their first HPMKT?
AHG: Wear comfy shoes, go to lots of happy hours, and HAVE FUN! Its HPMKT!
